Thomas Jacob Black is an American actor, comedian, singer, musician, songwriter, and YouTuber. He is known for his roles in the films High Fidelity, Shallow Hal, School of Rock, King Kong, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny, The Holiday, and the Kung Fu Panda franchise. Black is also the lead vocalist of the Grammy Award-winning comedic rock duo Tenacity D. He was given a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame in 2018. In December 2018, Black launched a YouTube channel called Jablinski Games.

Black was born in Santa Monica, California, on August 28, 1969, the son of satellite engineers Thomas William Black and Judith Love Cohen. His mother was born Jewish, while his father converted to Judaism. Black’s parents divorced when he was 10, and his father then stopped practicing Judaism. He moved to Culver City with his father and frequently visited his mother’s home. He has three older half-siblings through his mother; scientist Neil Siegel and Howard Siegel, and Rachel Siegel. He also has a younger half-brother, Neil Black, who worked on the Hubble Space Telescope and was also a writer. Black appeared in a television commercial for the Activision game Pitfall! in 1982. In 1987, Black joined the Actors’ Gang, a theater troupe founded by UCLA students including Tim Robbins. He later attended UCLA but dropped out during his sophomore year to pursue a career in entertainment.

In 1995 and 1996, he gained recurring roles on the HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show. In 2000, Black co-starred in the film High F fidelity as a wild employee in John Cusack’s character’s record store, a role he considers his breakout. He soon gained leading roles in films such as ShallowHal, Nacho Libre and Gulliver’s Travels. In 2011, he starred in Richard Linklater’s black comedy, The Big Year, a competitive bird-watching comedy, which was released in October 2011. He voiced the title role in Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3; this is his favorite role and he praises the tutoring of two-time Academy Award winner Dustin Hoffman. He received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor – Musical or Comedy, for his role in Bernie, a black comedy starring Owen Wilson, Steve Martin, and JoBeth Williams. He based his performance in Bernie on Orson Welles’ performance in King Kong. In 2012, he played a rich Texas funeral director who eventually murders a small town town and eventually befriends a group of young women. In 2013, he had a small role in The Holiday. He had a role in Tropic Thunder, which grossed US$20million on opening day, as well as on June 6, 2008, on opening night of Kung Fu Panda 2 and Kung Fu Fu Panda 3. In 2014, he appeared in the comedy film The Big Year.
