John Sidney McCain III was an American statesman and United States Navy officer. He served as a United States Senator for Arizona from 1987 until his death in 2018. He previously served two terms in the United States House of Representatives. McCain was the Republican nominee for president of the U.S. in the 2008 election, which he lost to Barack Obama. He was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2017 and died on August 25, 2018, at age 81.

McCain Sr., were also Naval Academy graduates and both became four-star admirals in theUnited States Navy. McCain referred to himself as an Episcopalian as recently as June 2007, after which he said he came to identify as a Baptist. He also fought as a lightweight boxer and sometimes stood up for bullying targets of his classmates, but only passed enough subjects to pass him on to high school. He attended various schools in Northern Virginia and Virginia, and graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria in 1954. McCain served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, where he was shot down and captured by the North Vietnamese. He experienced episodes of torture and refused an out-of-sequence early release. He retired from the Navy as a captain in 1981 and moved to Arizona. In 1982, McCain was elected to the United US House of Reps, where He served two term.

He entered the Senate in 1987 and easily won reelection five times. McCain subsequently adopted more orthodox conservative stances and attitudes and largely opposed actions of the Obama administration, especially with regard to foreign policy matters. He refused to support then-Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in 2016; McCain won re-election to a sixth and final term that same year. McCain opposed the Affordable Care Act, but cast the deciding vote against the ACA-repealing American Health Care Act of 2017. In 2015, he became Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, He was also known for his work in the 1990s to restore diplomatic relations with Vietnam. McCain entered the race for the Republican nomination for president in 2000 but lost a heated primary season contest to Governor George W Bush of Texas. He secured the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 but lost the general election to Obama. McCain later became a Republican presidential candidate for the 2008 presidential election, but lost to Obama in the primary season. He died in August 2018 at the age of 81, after suffering from brain cancer for more than a decade. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, and two daughters, Meghan and Juli, and a son, John III, who was born in 1987. He leaves behind a wife, Mark, and three children, John Sidney McCain Jr., Jr. and John Sidney III, a son-in-law, and one daughter, Sidney McCain, III.
