Benjamin Netanyahu is an Israeli politician serving as Prime Minister of Israel since 2009. He is the longest-serving prime minister in Israeli history and the first to be born in Israel after the establishment of the state. Since December 2016, Netanyahu has been under investigation for corruption by Israeli police and prosecutors. He was indicted on charges of breach of trust, bribery and fraud on 21 November 2019.

Netanyahu is the longest-serving prime minister in Israeli history and the first to be born in Israel after the establishment of the state. Since December 2016, Netanyahu has been under investigation for corruption by Israeli police and prosecutors. On 21 November 2019, he was indicted on charges of breach of trust, bribery and fraud. Due to the indictment, Netanyahu is legally required to relinquish all of his ministry posts other than the prime minister position. Netanyahu was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, to a predominantly Ashkenazi Jewish family with some Sephardic ancestry, who claim descent from the Vilna Gaon. Netanyahu’s paternal grandfather was an accomplished historian specializing in the Jewish Golden Age of Spain. When Netanyahu’s father emigrated to Israel he was given the surname “Mileikowsky” meaning “God given to God” Netanyahu was educated in Jerusalem and the Philadelphia area of the United States. He graduated from MIT with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science, Netanyahu became an economic consultant for the Boston Consulting Group. He moved back to Israel in 1978 to found the Yonatan Netanyahu Anti-Terror Institute. In 1984, Netanyahu was appointed the Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations by Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, a role he held until 1988. He later served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Finance in the government of Ariel Sharon, but eventually resigned over disagreements regarding the Gaza disengagement plan.

As Finance Minister, Netanyahu initiated major reforms of the Israeli economy that were credited by commentators as having significantly improved Israel’s subsequent economic performance. After the April 2019 election resulted in no party being able to form a government, a second election in 2019 took place. In the September 2019 election, the centrist Blue and White party, led by Benny Gantz, emerged slightly ahead of Netanyahu’sLikud; however, neither Netanyahu nor Gantz was able toform a government. In December 2020, the coalition collapsed with a new election scheduled for 2021. Under the terms of the agreement, the premiership would rotate between Netanyahu and Gantz in which Gantz is scheduled to succeed Netanyahu in November 2021, in which Netanyahu was scheduled to be the next prime minister. Netanyahu has made his closeness to Donald Trump central to his political appeal in Israel from 2016. He has been described as “friendly, cheerful, active, active and cheerful, friendly, cheerful and active, friendly and cooperative” by his former schoolmates and friends. He was married to former Israeli Cabinet minister Yossi Ben-Ghiat in 2005. He had three children with his first wife, Tzila Segal, who died in a car crash in 2007. He also has a son with former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who served as Israel’s ambassador to the U.S. in the 1980s and 1990s.
