About Osama bin Laden in brief

Summary Osama bin LadenOsama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden was a founder of the pan-Islamic militant organization al-Qaeda. He was shot and killed by US Navy SEALs inside a private residential compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where he lived with a local family from Waziristan. Bin Laden is most well known for his role in masterminding the September 11 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 and prompted the United States to initiate the War on Terror. There is no universally accepted standard for transliterating Arabic words and Arabic names into English; however, bin Laden’s name is most frequently rendered ‘Osama’ or ‘Usama’ in the West. The spellings with o and e come from a Persian-influenced pronunciation also used in Afghanistan, where bin Laden spent many years. His admirers have referred to him by several nicknames, including the ‘Prince of the Sheik’ or the ‘Jihadist’ He was banished from Saudi Arabia in 1992, and shifted his base to Sudan, until U.S. pressure forced him to leave Sudan in 1996. He declared a war against the United states, initiating a series of bombings and related attacks. From 2001 to 2011, the FBI offered a USD 25 million bounty in their search for him. He had assumed the name Osama bin Laden, never officially registered, but bin Ladenal-Qahtani, his father’s father’s first name. He also assumed the kununyah, the hereditary hereditary title of the bin Laden family’s son Omar bin Laden.

He died on May 2, 2011, after a decade-long manhunt by the FBI and Central Intelligence Agency. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son-in-law, all of whom are still living in the United Arab Emirates. The name bin Laden means’son of’ in Arabic; the nasab bin means ‘father’,’son’, or’son’ in English. The word ‘bin’ is used to refer to bin Laden alone, not as a patronymic, not in the Western manner in which it is usually translated. He has been known to use the term ‘Osamas’ in reference to himself or to his family, as well as to other members of his family. The U.N. Security Council and the European Union have designated al- Qaeda as a terrorist group. It is also known as ‘The Al-Qaeda Group’ by the United Nations Security Council, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and various countries. It was founded by bin Laden in 1988, and has been responsible for many mass-casualty attacks worldwide, including 9/11 and other terror attacks. It has been called ‘the most dangerous terrorist organization in the history of the world’ and ‘the greatest threat to the West’ by some analysts. The group has been linked to al-Qaida’s leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was killed in a drone strike in 2011.
