Michael Kirk Douglas is an American actor and producer. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Gordon Gekko in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street. In 1975, Douglas produced One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, having acquired the rights to the Ken Kesey novel from his father. Douglas currently stars as an aging acting coach in Chuck Lorre’s comedy series The Kominsky Method, and in the Netflix series Green Eggs and Ham.

Douglas was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, the first child of actors Kirk Douglas and Diana Dill. His parents met at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. His paternal grandparents were emigrants from Chavusy. His mother was from Devonshire Parish, Bermuda, and had English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, French, Belgian, and Dutch ancestry. His great-grandfather, Thomas Newbold Dill, served as Attorney General of Bermuda, as a Member of the Parliament of Bermuda, and as commanding officer of the Bermuda Militia Artillery.

He is a cousin of the Right Reverend Nicholas Dill, the current Bishop of Bermuda. Douglas has a younger brother, Joel, and two paternal half-brothers, Peter Buydens and Eric Douglas. He attended The Allen-Stevenson School in New York City, and The Choate Preparatory School in Wallingford, Connecticut. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Drama from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was also the Honorary President of the UCSB Alumni Association. He studied acting with Wynn Handn Handman at The American Handman School of Theatre. He also studied acting at The New School for Social Research in Manhattan, New York. Douglas is the son of actor Kirk Douglas and his wife Diana Dill, and is the brother of Joel Douglas and step-mother of Peterbuydens. He received his B.A. in drama in 1968, and a B.S. in Drama in 1969. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two sons, Joel and Eric, and has two step-children, Peter and Peter. His father was Jewish, and was born Issur Danielovitch. Douglas’ maternal grandfather, Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Melville Dill, was a merchant, an MCP for Devonsire Parish from 1868 to 1888, and served as a member of the Legislative Council and an Assistant Justice from 1888, Mayor of the City of Hamilton from 1891 to 1897.
