Miami is ranked fourth on the list of All-time Associated Press National Poll Championships, tied with Southern California and Ohio State. The Hurricanes also holds a number of NFL Draft records, including most first-round selections in a single draft and most consecutive drafts with at least one first- round selection. The school’s first game was played on October 23, 1926, a 7–0 win over Rollins College before 304 fans. Its first varsity competition began in 1927, with Miami beating Rollins, 39–3, in its first game and going on to a 3–6–1 record. In 1934, the program played in itsfirst official bowl game, losing to Bucknell in the first Orange Bowl, 26–0. In 1937, the Hurricanes moved to a brand new brand new Burdine Municipal Stadium located west of downtown Miami. The following year, Miami played archrival Florida for the first time, defeating the Gators 19–7 at Florida Field. In 1941, Miami won the first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association title with an 8-2–2 record. The next year, the team moved away from the SIAA and became an independent once again, becoming an independent again three years later.

In 1953, Miami became a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference and won the Coastal Division title with a 7-2-2 record in its second year as a member. In 1959, Miami’s last home game of the season featured a first: the first Hurricane football game played on New Year’s Day against Howard at Miami’s University Stadium. In 1961, Miami defeated Manhattan College 7-0 at Moore Park in Miami to win the Palm Festival. In 1962, Miami beat Manhattan College, 39-0, in the inaugural Palm Festival game. In 1964, Miami lost to Temple 34-0 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in one of the nation’s first night games vs. Bowden College in Miami. In 1966, Miami was awarded its first national championship, beating the Gators, 19-7, in a game that was played in front of 19,000 fans at the Florida State Stadium in Tallahassee. In 1971, the school won its first Southern Interstate Athletic Association championship with a record of 8-1-2. In 1973, Miami earned its first SIA a title with its first win over Georgia Tech, a victory that was followed by a win over Virginia Tech. In 1974, Miami claimed its first league championship, defeating Virginia Tech, 17-6, at the Georgia Tech Memorial Stadium in East Rutherford, New York. In 1976, Miami took part in the National Championship Game, a game against Virginia Tech that was televised live on national television.
