The Florida Reef is the first living coral barrier reef system in the continental United States and the third largest coral barrier Reef system in world. It was named La Florida in the Easter season of the 15th century and because it was the first region of Florida to be visited and settled by Europeans. The Apalachee, Apalaches, and the Tequesta of northern and central Florida are the major American groups of the Florida Panhandle, the Tampa Bay area of the central Atlantic coast, the Tocobaga Bay area and the Calquesta area of southwest Florida. The Florida Keys are the only state in which there is a large number of Native American groups, including the Arapahoe, Osprey, and Seminole tribes. The only state that borders both the Gulf and Atlantic Ocean is Florida, and it has the highest number of barrier islands in the country.
