His father was Maurice Barrymore, an Indian-born British actor. Barrymore’s mother was Georgie Drew, a well-known 19th-century American actress and the manager of the Arch Street Theatre. His maternal grandparents were Louisa Lane Drew, and John Drew, also an actor whose specialty was comedy. He was married and divorced four times, and declared bankruptcy later in life. He struggled with alcohol abuse from the age of 14, and his personal life has been the subject of much attention before and since his death. He left the stage for 14 years and instead focused entirely on films. His stage-trained voice proved an asset when sound films were introduced. Three of his works, Grand Hotel, Twentieth Century and Midnight, have been inducted into the National Film Registry. He died in Los Angeles, California, on December 25, 1965. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey, with his sister Ethel Barrymore and his mother Georgie Barrymore. He had a son, Lionel, and a daughter, Ethel, who were both actors. He also had a step-son, Lionel Lionel Barrymore Jr., who was an actor-director-producer-turned-director. He has a son and daughter, John Barrymore III, who is a film director-actor-director, and daughter-in-law, actress-director Barbara Streisand.

His great-great-grandson is actor Julian Zelizer, who starred in the film version of The Godfather: Particulars. He played the lead role in the movie version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which was released in 1964. He later appeared in several other films, including The Great Detectives, Dr. No and The Sea Beast. He starred in several television shows, including “The Godfather” and “The Lord of the Flies” He died of lung cancer on December 26, 1965, at age 89. His funeral was held in New York City, and he was buried in Mount Pleasant, New York, on January 11, 1966. His son Lionel was the first to attend his funeral, and the last to leave the house. He never remarried or had any children of his own. His daughter Ethel had a successful career as an actress in the Broadway musical “The Mousetrap” in the 1950s and 1960s. His grandson, Lionel “Lionel” Barrymore is an actor in the TV series “Lincoln” and the film “The Grand Budapest Hotel” He also appeared in the television series “The Sopranos” and appeared in numerous other television series and films. He appeared in many musicals and television series, including the musicals “South Pacific” and  “The Sound of Music” He was known as the Great Profile.
