The plot follows a post-traumatic Laurie Strode who prepares to face Michael Myers in a final showdown on Halloween night, forty years after she survived his killing spree. Michael Myers has been institutionalized at Smith’s Grove Psychiatric Hospital for 40 years. The following day, as he is being prepared for transfer to a maximum security prison, Michael purposely crashes the bus, kills a father and son for their car, and then recovers his old mask from Aaron’s car.

In Haddonfield, Laurie is still living in fear of Michael; she is drinking heavily, rarely leaving her fortified house and alienating herself from her daughter Karen, whom the state took away from her at age 12. The only person she keeps in contact with is Karen’s daughter, Allyson. On October 31, Michael sees Aaron and Dana visiting his sister Judith’s grave, and follows them to a gas station where he kills them both, as well as a mechanic for his coveralls, He then returns to Haddonfields. Michael kills Oscar, and kills Allyson’s best friend Vicky and her boyfriend Dave are attacked by Michael. Dr. Ranbir Sartain – who has become obsessed with Michael’s enigmatic motivations – kills Michael in order to be able to study him wild. Michael flees for the first time in 40 years, and leaves Dr. Sartartain to study Michael’s wild attacks and leave for the dead. The next day, Michael kills a psychiatrist, who tries to kill Michael but fails to kill him – and leaves him for dead. Michael then flees again, killing a man and a woman at a Halloween party. Michael also kills a man at the gas station and a boy at a costume party. The final showdown takes place on October 29, and Michael kills Laurie and Allyson in front of her daughter.
