Thiruvathira

Thiruvathirai is a Hindu festival celebrated in the Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It takes place on the full moon night in the Tamil month of Margazhi. It is one of the major events in almost all the Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu and has been celebrated for more than 1500 years.

Lord Shiva is praised in Tamil by many names, one of them is Athiraiyan. Tamil hymns of Maanikavasagar’s Thiruvasagam are chanted in temples. On the very day of Thiruvithamcore Devaswom Board’s 10 day Festival is held during the festival. The festival is celebrated in a grand manner in 5 Sabhas of Sri Natarajar namely 1) Kanakasabha – at Chidambaram, 2) Velli Sabhai at Madurai, 3) Ratnasabha at Tiruvalankadu, 4) Tamrasabha  at Tirunelveli, 5) Chitrasab Ha at Kutralam. The idols of Nataraja and his consort Shivagami are taken out of the temple premises for a grand procession on this day.

It is one of the major events in almost all the Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu and has been celebrated for more than 1500 years. In the month of Makaram ThirUVathira Star is celebrated at Mathira Peedika Devi Temple, near Kadakkal in Kollam District of Kerala state. It has a connection with lord moon and is also the longest night in a year. In Thillai Pancha Murthi Thiruveethi Ula, will be held at around 12 pm Noon. The next day in the afternoon Lord Natarjar and Goddess Sivakami will bless devotees with Aarudra Darisanam and enter Kanaka Sabhai and enter the Sabhai. The MahaAbhishekam will be done to Lord Natarsa and Goddess Sivakamasundari at around 3 am.
