Stephen Edwin King is an American author of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, crime, science-fiction, and fantasy novels. His books have sold more than 350 million copies, and many have been adapted into films, television series, miniseries, and comic books. King has published 61 novels, including seven under the pen name Richard Bachman, and five non-fiction books. He has also written approximately 200 short stories, most of which have been published in book collections.

In 2003, the National Book Foundation awarded him the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. In 2015, he was awarded with a National Medal of Arts from the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts for his contributions to literature. King was raised Methodist, but lost his belief in organized religion while in high school. While no longer religious, he says he chooses to believe in the existence of God. He related in detail his primary inspiration for writing horror fiction in a chapter titled \”An Annoying Autobiographical Pause\”. He compared his uncle’s dowsing for water using the bough of an apple branch with the sudden realization of what he wanted to do for a living. He displayed an early interest in horror as an avid reader of EC horror comics, including Tales from the Crypt, and he later paid tribute to the comics in his screenplay for Creepshow. As a teen, King also won a Scholastic Art and Writing Award from Maine University, where he graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts in English.

The first story he published independently was a serial called Teenage Grave Robber, which was published in a revised form in 1965. That year, he wrote a column for the newspaper The Garbage Truck, The Campus, and participated in another fanzine, The Half-World of Suspense. He also wrote a series of short stories for the magazine Half-way Through, edited by Marv Wolfman, for which he won an award in 1966. King is married to his wife, Nellie Ruth King, and has a daughter, Naomi Rachel King, who was born in 1970. He is the father of two sons, David David King and Stephen Edwin King, Jr., who is also an author. He was awarded the Bram Stoker Awards, World Fantasy Awards, and British Fantasy Society Awards in 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2014. He received the 2004 World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement and the 2007 Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America. He lives in Maine with his wife and two children. He currently lives in Portland, Maine, with his husband and two daughters, Rachel Rachel King and Naomi Rachel, and their son, Stephen David King, III. King also has a son, David Edward King, a son-in-law, and a daughter-to-be, Rachel Elizabeth King, daughter-of-one. King lives in New York City, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
