Roberto Luongo

Roberto Luongo (born April 4, 1979) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender. He played 19 seasons in the National Hockey League for the New York Islanders, Florida Panthers and the Vancouver Canucks. He succeeded Martin Brodeur as Canada’s starting goaltender during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, winning a gold medal. In January 2014, Luongo was named to the 2014 Canadian Olympic hockey team, where he won his second Olympic gold medal in a largely backup role to Carey Price. He is second all time in games played as an NHL goaltender and third alltime in wins.

Jennings Trophy for backstopping his team to the lowest goals against average in the league. He has since become a Junior AAA coach, while his family lives in Saint-Leonard, Quebec, a strong Italian community with a strong community, just four blocks away from Martin Bro deur, who became the New Jersey Devils goaltender for six years before Luongo became the NHL goaltender for the Devils.

His father is an Italian immigrant, born in Santa Paolina, Avellino, while Luongo’s mother, an Irish-Canadian, worked in marketing with Air Canada. His two younger brothers, Leo and Fabio, who also aspired to be goaltenders, also played Junior A in the British Columbia Hockey League with the Williams Lake Timberwolves in the 2004–05 season. He was born to Pasqualina and Antonio Luongo in Montreal, Quebec. He began playing hockey at the age of eight as a forward and played soccer until he was 14, when he entered high school at Antoine deExupéry de St-upry. He graduated from Montreal Francophone high school with a degree in economics. He now lives in Saint-Leonardo, Quebec with his wife and two children. He currently works as a goaltending coach with the Junior AAA team, HC Lugano. His son, Leo Luongo, is a goalie coach for the Junior AAA club, HC Lugano in Lugano, Quebec and is also a goaltender coach for the B.C. Ontario Athletic Coupe de la Salute. He has two younger sons, Fabio and Leo, who are also goalkeeping coaches. He previously played in the QMJHL for the Val-d’Or Foreurs and the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, winning back-to-back President’s Cups and establishing the league’s all-time play-off records in games playing and wins.
