In 2010, she was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India. Her only marriage to Mukesh Aggarwal in 1990 ended a year later when he committed suicide. She is reluctant to give interviews or discuss her life, which resulted in her being labelled a recluse. Her father did not acknowledge his paternity during her childhood. She speaks Telugu fluently in Hindi, although she thinks in English. She did not have any personal aspirations in acting, but the financial state of her family compelled her to do so. After dropping out of school at the age of 13, she appeared in the Telugu film IntiGuttu, but did not start a career in acting until she was 25. She was married to actor MukeshAggarwal from 1989 to 1991. She had a daughter with him, but they later divorced and she has a half-brother and five half-sisters. She also has a son with another actor, Ravi Agrawal, who she married in 2011.

She currently lives in Mumbai. She lives with her husband and two children in Mumbai, and has a daughter and son with her ex-husband, actor Amitabh Bachchan, and a stepdaughter with actor Ravi Kulkarni. Her son and daughter-in-law have a son and a daughter together, who lives in New York. She and her husband have two children, both of whom live in the U.S. They have a daughter, who is studying at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her husband is also a film director, working on a series of films in the United States, including The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Dark Knight Rises. Her daughter and step-daughter have two sons, who live in London and New York, and have two step-daughters, who also live in Los Angeles and New Zealand. She has often played strong and complicated female characters, from fictional to literary, in both mainstream and independent films. Though her career has gone through certain periods of decline, she has gained a reputation for reinventing herself numerous times and has been credited for her ability to sustain her status. For her performance in the comedy Khubsoorat, she received her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She followed it with roles in Baseraa, Ek Hi Bhool, Jeevan Dhaara and Agar Tum Na Hote.
