The latest game in the series is The Phantom Pain, which was released on September 1, 2015 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation4, and Xbox One. The series’ main storyline was concluded in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the PlayStation 3 in 2008. The game is set after the Patriots and stars Raiden, the protagonist of Sons of Liberty who turned a cyborg into a ninja. The player often takes control of a special forces operative who is assigned the task of finding the titular superweapon \”Metal Gear\”, a bipedal walking tank with the ability to launch nuclear weapons. The franchise has also been adapted into other media, such as comics, novels, and drama CDs. Metal Gear V: Ground Zeroes was released March 18, 2014 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox 3, for PC, PlayStation 360, Xbox One, and Steam. It was released as an introduction to the next game, which served as much shorter than previous installments. The games are usually set outside the main storyline and are usually released for the Game Boy Color, PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable.

Several re-releases of the series were produced as well as several games for Sony’s PlayStation Portable and Sony’s Game Boy Game Boy. The most recent of these games was Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, released for PlayStation Portable in October 2013. It is set shortly after the events of Portable Ops, and was set shortly before Peace Walker in April 2010. It also features a multiplayer spin-off called Metal Gear Online, which has been released on the PlayStation3 and Xbox 360 since January 2014.
