She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Jin Ng and Virginia Fong.

She graduated from the University of Chicago in 1990, where she played softball for four years and was named MVP infielder, and earned a B. A. in public policy. She then worked her way up in the front office of several MLB teams and became a vice president of the league. In 2005, Ng was interviewed for the vacant position of Dodgers general manager.
