In 2006, she became the United Kingdom’s best-selling female artist and Europe’s highest selling European female artist. She is fluent in English and speaks some Russian; despite still speaking her native Georgian fluently she has admitted that she cannot write songs in the language. She has skydived four times and taken several flying lessons in 2004 and 2005. In 2009, she nearly drowned in New Zealand after she choked on a lungful of helium. On 10 August 2005, just before she turned 21,Melua became a British citizen along with her parents and brother. The citizenship ceremony took place in Weybridge, Surrey. According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2008,. Melua had a fortune of £18 million, making her the seventh-richest British musician under the. age of 30. She enjoys roller coasters and glides, often paraglides and hanglides, but in her life are always “checkful in her emotions” Melua has not attended university, though she has often stated her desire to do so, saying that English literature, history and physics would be her courses of choice should she have the chance to go to university.

She was baptised Georgian Orthodox Christian and is a baptised Russian Orthodox Christian. She considers herself to be an ‘adrenaline junkie’ because she enjoys rollercoasters and co-fairs. She also has a passion for the arts and is an avid supporter of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, which she has helped to organise and raise funds for through her charity, The Royal Institute of British Engineers (RBI). She is also a keen golfer and has taken part in several charity golf tournaments, including the Queen’s Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal International Golf and Country Club of London. She currently lives in Notting Hill, London, with her husband and two children. She lives with her family in a flat in Maida Vale, where she has transformed a spare bedroom into a recording studio. She and her family return to Georgia every year every year to see her uncles and grandparents, but she is proud to now be a British citizens, but I am also proud to see my grandparents and grandparents every year, too. She says: “As a family, we have been very fortunate to find a happy lifestyle in this country and we feel like we belong.’” She has three children, including a son, a daughter and a son-in-law, and two step-children. Her father is a heart surgeon and she has a brother, a son and a step-daughter.
