He is a member of the Republican Party and served as chairman of the Indiana Republican Party from 2011 to 2013.
He was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 2000, but was defeated. He ran for governor in 2016 and won over Democratic nominee John R. Gregg, 51. 4% to 45. 4%. Holcomb was reelected in 2020 over Democratic nomniee Woody Myers and Libertarian nominee Donald Rainwater. He has made attracting international investment and opening Indiana’s office for Hoosier-produced goods a priority for his first term. Since taking office, Holcomb has led 11 international trips with government, business, education, and nonprofit leaders. In April 2017, Indianapolis-based International Center of Citizen of the Year named Holcomb its International Citizen of Year.
