Tennant has also worked extensively as a voice actor and in theatre, including a portrayal of the title character in a 2008 production of Hamlet and the voice of Scrooge McDuck in DuckTales. In 2015, he received the National Television Award for Special Recognition for his work in Broadchurch and Jessica Jones. He took his stage name from Pet Shop Boys frontman Neil Tennant after reading a copy of Smash Hits magazine. He was awarded his first major TV role as the manic depressive Campbell in BBC Scotland drama series Takin’ Over the Asylum after impressing director David Blair during filming of another drama – Strathblair. He has subsequently appeared in many productions: Doctor Who in the audio drama in the West Wing, Posh Nosh, The West Wing on More4 and West Wing: The Ultimate Quiz on BBC4. His first big-screen role was in Jude, in which he shared a scene with Christopher Eccleston, playing a drunken undergraduate who challenges his character’s intellect to prove his intellect. He also played the title prince in the RSC’s 2009 adaptation of Hamlets. He made his professional acting debut while still in secondary school. At age 16, he passed an audition for the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, becoming one of their youngest students and studying there between the ages of 17 and 20.

He later had to legally change his surname to meet Screen Actors Guild rules. His maternal great-grandparents, William and Agnes Blair, were staunch Protestants from Northern Ireland’s County Londonderry, who were among the signatories of the Ulster Covenant in 1912. William was a member of the Orange Order. His paternal grandfather, footballer Archie McLeod, met William’s daughter Nellie while playing for Derry City FC. McLeod was descended from tenant farmers from the Isle of Mull. In the 1990s, he appeared in several plays at the Dundee Repertory Theatre. He became godfather to Arabella Weir’s five-year-old son Arabella for years and became the youngest child with the comic actress and writer for five years and godmother to her six-month-old daughter Arabella. In 2011, he played the role of DI Alec Hardy in the ITV crime drama series Broadchurch, and Kilgrave in the Netflix superhero series Jessica Jones, which he also co-wrote and co-starred in. He appeared in the film Harry Potter: The Goblet Of Fire in 2012 and the TV series Harry Potter And The Goblett of Fire in 2013. He played the lead role in the fantasy film Harry Harry and The Goblets of Fire, and also appeared in a number of other films and TV shows.
