Young was suspended for two games by the NCAA for getting an unauthorized loan from a family friend to allegedly help his girlfriend attend the 2019 Rose Bowl, which he later repaid in full. He is the ninth defensive player since 1982 to be nominated for the Heisman Trophy, and the first since Ron Dayne in 2000 to win it since its inception in 1982. Young also won several defensive player of the year awards and was voted the Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year and was a finalist for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the environment in the U.S.

He has been named to the All-Big Ten and All-America teams for the 2019 and 2019 seasons, as well as to the NFL’s All-Defensive Team for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Young is also a member of the Washington High School choir, playing the piano, saxophone, and violin. He attended St. Columba School in Oxon Hill, Maryland, and DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. Young played quarterback, tight end, and outside linebacker before switching to defensive end later his freshman year.
