Carlos Felipe Peña is a Dominican former professional baseball first baseman. He played in Major League Baseball for the Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics, Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Devil RaysRays, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros and Kansas City Royals. Peña was mentioned several times in Michael Lewis’ book Moneyball and was a minor character in the film based on the book. He was inducted into the CCBL Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2012, he received the Roberto Alomar Award for Most Valuable Player.

He is the oldest of four children born to Felipe and Juana Marisela Peña. His family moved to the United States from the Dominican Republic when he was 12, initially living with one of his uncles. He graduated from Haverhill High School in Massachusetts, in 1995. He went to Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, but returned home after one year and attended Northeastern University in Boston, where he studied electrical engineering. His career batting average at Northeastern was. 324 and he finished with 24 home runs in two seasons. In 1998, he was selected in the first round by theTexas Rangers in the Major League baseball draft. In 1999, Peña played for the Charlotte Rangers, the Rangers Advanced Single-A team. In 2001, he advanced another level in 2001, this time playing for the Oklahoma Redhawks, the Ranger’s Triple-A affiliate. He made his Major League debut on September 5, starting at first base, wearing number 15, and going hitless in three at-bats.

In 2002, he played in his first full season in the Tigers’ everyday first baseman role. He established a 12-game hitting streak from September 8–21, which tied teammate Omar Infante for the longest hitting streak for a Tigers’ player. In 2003, he established career highs with 3 home runs and 7 RBIs in May against the Cleveland Indians, and 2 doubles in June against the Chicago Cubs. He also played in an American League game against the New York Yankees on May 19, 2003, and went 3–4 with 2 doubles and 2 home runs. In 2004, he went 3-4 with two doubles and a home run against the Tampa Bay Rays. In 2005, he had a game-winning hit against the Baltimore Orioles. In 2006, he hit a double against the Oakland Athletics and a triple against the San Diego Padres. In 2007, he made his MLB debut against the Seattle Mariners. In 2008, he appeared in the All-Star Game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. In 2009, he started in the World Series for the Chicago White Sox against the Houston Astros. In 2010, he became the first Dominican player to play in all three major league leagues in the same season. In 2011, he won the Golden Glove Award for his performance in the American League. In 2012, he received the Roberto Alomar Award for Most Valuable Player. In 2013, he helped the Red Sox win their first World Series title. In 2014, he also won the Gold Glove award for his efforts as a player.
