She came to prominence in 1970 when she began singing in the Continental Baths, a local gay bathhouse where she managed to build up a core following. She was named after actress Bette Davis, though Davis pronounced her first name in two syllables, and Midler uses one. She won four Golden Globes, three Grammy Awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award in a career spanning over half a century. She has also starred in numerous hit films, including Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Ruthless People, Outrageous Fortune, Hocus Pocus, The Stepford Wives, Parental Guidance, and The Addams Family. In 2008, she signed a contract with Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for a residency, Bette Midler: The Showgirl Must Go On, which ended in 2010.

She received the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Hello,Dolly! in 2008. She also had starring roles in For the Boys and Gypsy, winning two additional Golden Globe Awards for these films and receiving a second Academy Award nomination for the former. She appeared in the first professional production of the rock opera Tommy in 1971, with Richard Pearlman and the Seattle Opera. In the late 1990s, Betty Midler appeared on the first run of Tommy Tonight, which was the first time she had appeared on stage with the director of the Pearlman Opera. She is married to Barry Manilow, who produced her first album in 1972, The Divine Miss M. M. It was during this time that she built up her core following at the Continentalbaths, during the release of her album ‘Bathhouse’ Betty said she was at the forefront of the gay liberation movement, and I did my part to help it move forward So, I kind of wear the label of Betty’Bath house’ with pride. She currently lives in New York City with her husband and three children. She and her husband have a son, Joseph, who was born in New Jersey and moved to Hawaii in the 1950s. The couple have a daughter, daughter, and son-in-law, both of whom were born in the 1970s and 1980s. They have two sons, Joseph and Joseph Jr., and a son named Joseph Jr.
