Matthew Louis Gaetz II is an American politician and lawyer serving as the U.S. representative for Florida’s 1st congressional district since 2017. His district covers a large portion of the western Florida Panhandle, including Pensacola, Destin, Navarre and his hometown, Fort Walton Beach. From 2010 to 2016, Gaetz represented Florida’s 4th district in the Florida House of Representatives, which includes most of Okaloosa County.

From 2010 to 2016, Gaetz represented Florida’s 4th district in the Florida House of Representatives, which includes most of Okaloosa County. His grandfather, Jerry Gaetz, was the mayor of Rugby, North Dakota, and a candidate for lieutenant governor of North Dakota at the 1964 North Dakota Republican Party state convention, where he died of a heart attack. Gaetz’s father, Don, represented parts of northwest Florida as a member of the Florida State Senate from 2006 to 2016 and was Senate president from 2012 to 2014. In the November 8, 2016, general election, he defeated Democratic nominee Steven Specht with 69% of the vote. He is the seventh Republican in the nation to serve in the 1st district, and one of the most Republican in Florida’s most Republican district. He was elected to the House in 2010 after the resignation of Republican state representative Ray Sansom on corruption charges in February 2010. In March 2010, he ran in the special election to succeed Sansom in the4th district, which included southern Santa Rosa County and Okalo Rosa County. In 2012, he was reelected unopposed in 2012 and 2014. He announced in 2013 that in 2016 he would run for the state senate seat then held by his father, who would be term-limited out of the Senate in 2016.

On March 21, 2016 he withdrew from the race, instead to run for U. S. House in 1st House seat. He won the Republican primary with 35% of vote, and the general election with 69%. He is virtually assured of victory in the 2018 general election; with a Partisan Voting Index of R+22, he is the only person in the country who can claim to have a 1-in-22 chance of winning the Republican nomination for the presidency. He has been married to his wife, Victoria, since 2007. They have two children, a son, a daughter, and two step-daughters. They live in Florida with their mother and a step-son, and have a son and step-daughter, both of whom live in the Tampa Bay area. They are expecting their third child, a girl, due in April 2018. They also have a daughter who is due to be born in July 2018. The couple has a son who was born in February 2013, and he is expected to be a grandfather in May 2018. He also has a daughter with whom he has been involved in a number of high-profile cases, including the Trayvon Martin case and the Florida Stand Your Ground defense. He served as chairman of the Criminal Justice Subcommittee of Florida’s House Judiciary Committee. In 2013, he proposed legislation to eliminate the federal ethanol content mandate that 10% of gasoline sold in Florida contain ethanol; Governor Rick Scott signed the legislation.
