Summary Typhoon Goni (2020)Typhoon Goni, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Rolly, was an extremely powerful tropical cyclone that made landfall as a Category 5–equivalent super typhoon on Catanduanes. Goni became the strongest landfalling tropicalcyclone on record by 1-minute winds, eclipsing the previous record held by Haiyan and Meranti. The storm brought severe flash flooding to Legazpi, as well as lahar flow from the nearby Mayon Volcano. In all, the typhoon killed at least 25 people and caused at least ₱17. 9 billion worth of damage. Over 390,000 out of 1 million evacuated individuals have been displaced in the region. Rolly will be retired and will be replaced with a new name for a future typhoon season. It was the nineteenth named storm, ninth typhoon, and second super Typhoon of the 2020 Pacific typhoons season. The typhoon was the strongest tropical cyclones observed worldwide thus far in 2020 and one of the most intense tropicalcyclones on record. It eventually reached the country late on November 5 as a tropical depression, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds. After Goni moved into the West Philippine Sea, it subsequently weakened into a tropical storm. It then moved generally westward towards Vietnam, before further intensifying into the first Category 5-equivalentsuper typhoon of the season, before moving away from the Philippines. It is now no longer a typhoon and is no longer in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAGASA) The storm has been downgraded to a severe tropical storm by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PGAASA).

It has also been named Super Typhoon Goni by the JTWC and Super Typhoon Rolly by the PAGASa. It has been named after a former typhoon that hit the Philippines in the 1980s. It will be renamed after a new typhoon to be named in the 2020 season, which is due to begin in mid-November. The name Rolly is expected to be used for a new storm that will be named after an upcoming typhoon in the 2030s or 2050s. The PAGasA has not yet decided on a name for the new storm, which will be called Super Typhoon Typhoon Typhoon Tropical Storm Tsunami Tornado Tunami and Tropical Storm Tropical Storm Rolly in the 2020 Pacific typhoon season. It also has not been named for the current storm that is currently in the Pacific Ocean, which was named Tropical Storm Goni on October 27. On October 29, Goni entered the PAR and was named Rolly. On the next day, the system was declared a super Typhoon. It continued intensifying over the Philippine Sea and was upgraded to a Category 5–equ equivalent super typhoons on October 30. On this basis, the JMA and JT WC estimated a minimum central pressure of 905 hPa.
