About Tropical Storm Zelda (1991) in brief

Summary Tropical Storm Zelda (1991)Severe Tropical Storm Zelda was the last tropical cyclone of the 1991 Pacific typhoon season. Zelda caused significant damage in the Marshall Islands, and operations at Kwajalein Missile Range were disrupted severely. About 60 percent of homes were destroyed in Ebeye Island, leaving 6,000 people without residence. President of the United States George H. W. Bush declared the storm to be a major disaster, allowing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist with funding and repairs. Zelda became extratropical on December 5, and stopped tracking just past the International Date Line. Remnants of the storm moved inland on December 7, and the JTWC issued the last warning of the year on December 8, when it was downgraded to a tropical depression.

Zelda was named after a weak area of low pressure that formed near the International date Line on November 27. It strengthened into a severe tropical storm on November 28, and was named Zelda by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Zelda weakened into a tropical storm by December 2, and then a tropical Depression two days later. The storm was last to make landfall in the Pacific Ocean on December 9, 1991, near the island of Honshu in the Philippines. It was the first typhoon of the season to be named after an El Niño-related system. It is the only typhoon to be known to have made landfall on the Pacific coast of the U.S. and the only one to do so in 1991.
