In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’”. The movie won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Take My Breath Away” performed by Berlin. It also won an IMAX 3D re-release in 2013, and was released on Blu-ray and DVD in November 2013, as well as on DVD and Blu-Ray in November 2014, and on DVD in January 2015. The sequel was originally set to be released on July 3, 2015, but was postponed due to concerns over the health of the lead character, Maverick Mitchell, who is now in his mid-40s. It is released on May 16, 2016, and is expected to be a box-office success, as it has already grossed more than US$1 billion in North America and over US$2 billion in Europe.

It has also been released in Australia, where it has sold more than 1.5 million copies and is being shown in cinemas in Australia and New Zealand, with plans to open in the UK in 2017. The plot centers on a young naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He and his Radar Intercept Officer, Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw are given the chance to train at the US Navy’s Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California. Maverick becomes a rival to top student LT Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky, who considers Maverick’s attitude ‘foolish’ and his flying ‘dangerous’ Maverick and Iceman are now direct competitors for the TOPGUN Trophy, an A-4 Trophy for the highest score in every flight in the course of the film. During a training hop Maverick abandons his wingman Jester to chase Viper, demonstrating the value of teamwork over individual prowess. The two begin a romantic relationship, and Maverick eventually marries Charlie Blackwood, an astrophysicist and civilian TOPGun instructor. In the end, the film ends with Maverick as the most successful fighter pilot of all time, with a score of 4.4 out of a possible 5.0. The last film in the series, Top Gun, was released in 1989, and it was a box office success.
