It is based on the experience of María Belón and her family in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland star in the film. The film received positive reviews from critics for its direction and its acting. Watts was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, the Golden Globe Award forBest Actress – Motion Picture Drama, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. The tsunami was recreated with a mixture of digital and real water surges in a slow motion tank in Spain in August 2010. Director Bayona committed to working with real water rather than a computer-generated wave and wanted the story to be authentic. This meant that the main characters of the film were meant to be universal in order to create a universal film in which nationalities were irrelevant to the plot. It was a co-production of Spanish film companies Apaches Entertainment and Telecinco, and employed the crew from The Orphanage, including the director, production writer, cinematographer, and editor, and composer, and manager of cinematmed between the Ciadad de la Luz studio in Alacantantant, Spain and Thailand in October 2010.

The movie was released in the U.S. on December 18, 2012. It has been released in UK cinemas on December 21, 2013 and in Australia on December 22, 2013. The UK release date is December 23, 2013, and in the US on December 28, 2013,. The UK version of The Impossible is available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Blu-Ray, and on DVD in the UK on December 29, 2013 and January 14, 2014. The US release date of TheImpossible is December 30, 2014, and the UK release dates are December 31, 2014 and January 8, 2015. The U.K. release date for The Impossible has been delayed until January 6, 2015, by the Universal Studios Motion Picture Association of America (USPPA) to allow it to be released in cinemas across the world. The British release date has been postponed until January 7, 2015 and the US Release date is January 9, 2016. It will also be released on DVD on January 10, 2016, and January 13, 2017.
