The U.S. Army considers itself descended from the Continental Army, and considers its institutional inception to be the origin of that armed force in 1775. The Army’s five core competencies are prompt and sustained land combat, combined arms operations (to include combined arms maneuver and wide–area security), armored and mechanizedoperations and airborne and air assault operations.
