Robert Underdunk Terwilliger Jr., PhD, better known as Sideshow Bob, is a recurring character in the animated television series The Simpsons. He began his career as a sidekick on Krusty the Clown’s television show, but after enduring constant abuse, Bob attempted to frame his employer for armed robbery. The plan was foiled by his arch-enemy, Bart Simpson, and Bob was sent to prison. In each appearance thereafter, Bob has assumed the role on The Simpsons of an evil genius. Bob has had speaking appearances in 22 episodes and been featured in 14. In addition to his recurring role in the series, SideshowBob has made several appearances in other Simpsons media. He appears in the Simpsons Comics, cameos in the 2007 video game The Simpsons Game, and stars as the main antagonist in The Simpsons Ride at Universal Studios’ theme parks. He has been described as ‘Frasier pickled in arsenic’ and has been compared to Frasier Crane from Cheers. Grammer, who based Bob’s voice on that of actor Ellis Rabb, has been praised for his portrayals of the character. In 2006, he won an Emmy for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for his work in the episodes ‘The Italian Bob’ and ‘Bobby, It’s Cold Outside’ The most recent of the latter, aired during the 31st season of The Simpsons, aired in December 2019.

Bob’s brother Cecil and his father were played by David Hyde Pierce and John Mahoney, respectively, echoing the roles they played in Cheers and Fr asier. Bob is also known for his singing voice; several of Grammer’s performances have been included in the The Simpsons musical compilations. In the episode ‘Wanted: Dead, Then Alive’, Bob finally gets his wish of killing Bart, commenting that he spent 24 years trying to kill a ten-year-old child. However, he becomes bored with Bart dead, so he brings him back to life so that he can repeatedly kill Bart over and over again. In season three’s ‘Black Widower’, Bob again attempts to blow up Bart’s aunt Selma Bouvier’s house during their honeymoon. After being paroled from prison, Bob follows them to their hideout on Terror Lake, where he prepares to kill the entire family. In ‘Cape Feare’, Bob targets Bart directly, threatening him and forcing him into hiding as part of the Witness Relocation Program. Bob returns to prison and again foils the plan and Sideshow Steve’s plan to kill Bart and Selma. He also appears in ‘The Simpsons Game’, in which he comesos in a cameo role as a character called ‘Sideshow Bob’ in the game.
