He is a founding member of the heavy metal band White Zombie, releasing four studio albums with the band. In 1997, he began working on his debut solo studio album, Hellbilly Deluxe, which was released in August 1998. In 2000, Zombie directed the horror film House of 1000 Corpses in 2000, though the controversial project was not released until 2003. His second album, The Sinister Urge, became his second platinum album in the U.S.

In 2012, Zombie released a second remix album and directed the film The Lords of Salem. In 2013, Zombie also released his fifth studio album Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor. In 2016, he released his next solo album The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser, followed nearly five years later by his upcoming seventh studio album The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy. His music and lyrics have featured notable horror and sci-fi themes.

Cummings had a fascination with horror films and has stated that he always wanted to be Alice Cooper, Steven Spielberg, Bela Lugosi and Stan Lee. His parents worked in a carnival, but they chose to leave after a riot broke out and tents were set on fire. Cummings graduated from Haverhill High School in 1983. He moved to New York City and began attending Pratt Institute, where he met eventual bandmate Sean Yseult. Cummings and YseULT co-founded the band known as White Zombie and released three extended plays, with their debut album Soul-Crusher following in 1987. They released their second studio album Make Them Die Slowly in 1989 to little commercial reaction. Although the album did not enter the Billboard 200 chart until a year after its release, it became the band’s second album. The band’s third album, Laorcist: Devil Music Volume One, was released through the label The Mooni Moon in 1992. It became their third studio album; it became their second album to enter the top ten of the Billboard 100. The album was released on Geffen Records. In 1992, Zombie began dating Sheri Mooni, and they dated for seven years before they broke up in 1991. The pair continued to work in the band together, but later moved on to work on their own record label, The Silent Explosion. In 2003, Zombie and Mooni began dating shortly after the release of their fourth album, Sexorcist Volume One; it was released about a year later.
