The film was considered by many critics to be the best film of 2019 as well as one of the best films of the decade. It is also the 42nd highest rated film of all time on Metacritic. It grossed over USD 264 million worldwide on a production budget of about USD 11 million, becoming the highest-grossing South Korea film. It stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Jang Hye-jin, and Lee Jung-eun. It premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2019, and was then released in South Korea by CJ Entertainment on 30 May 2019. The Kim family—father Ki-taek, mother Chung-sook, daughter Ki-jung and son Ki-woo—live in a small semi-basement apartment, have low-paying temporary jobs as pizza box folders, and struggle to make ends meet.

When the Parks leave on a camping trip, the Kims revel in the luxuries of their residence before Moon-gwang appears at the door. She enters a hidden entrance to an underground bunker created by the architect and previous homeowner, where Geun-sae, has been secretly living for over four years, hiding from loan sharks. A severe rainstorm brings the Parks early, and The Kims scramble to clean up the home and subdue Moon- gwang and the Parks. The next day, Mrs Park reveals that Da-song had a seizure-inducing experience on a previous birthday, when he saw a \”ghost\”—actually Geunsae—emerging from the basement. They find their home flooded with sewer water and are forced to shelter in a gymnasium with other displaced people with other people. They manage to sneak out, but not before hearing Mr Park’s off-handed comments about how he saw the Kim’s party with the family’s young son, Da-Song. The family is forced to leave the house and go back to their apartment. They eventually find their way back to the apartment, but the eavesdropping Kims accidentally reveal themselves to the Parks, and they are caught by the Park’s housekeeper, who threatens to send the video to the Park family to the police. They escape and hide in the basement, where they hide from the Parks until the next day.
