The region covers 5,502. 75 km2 with a population of 414,900, bordering Armenia to the east and north, Iran to the south and west, and Turkey to the northwest. The area became part of Safavid Iran in the 16th century. In 1828, after the last Russo-Persian War and the Treaty of Turkmenchay, the NakhChivan Khanate passed from Iranian into Imperial Russian possession. In January 1990, the region declared independence from the USSR to protest against the suppression of the national movement in Azerbaijan. It is an autonomous area of Azerbaijan, governed by its own elected legislature. The oldest material culture artifacts found in the region date back to the Neolithic Age. After the death of Alexander the Great in 521BC, several generals, including Neoplemus, attempted to take the region. It was part of the Satrapy of Armenia under Achaemenid Persia and later the Urartu Media State. The Nakh chivan region has been ruled by different leaders since the early 20th century, with the current leader Vasif Talibov having been the leader since 1995. It has also been known as Nakhichevan, Naxcivan, Nachidsheuan, and Nakhijevan, Nuhișvân,Nakhchawan, Nakhjavan, andNakhdjevan.

The name is a corruption of the Kurdish name of this very city, which means ‘place of descent’ or ‘place where people from the Kurdish people live’ Nakhichivan is also known as ‘Aghri mountain’ and ‘Ağrı dağı’ which is one of the popular mountains of Turkish people. Nakhachivan is mentioned in Ptolemy’s Geography and by other classical writers as \”Naxuana\”. The region continues to suffer from the effects of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and its Karki exclave has been under Armenian occupation ever since the First Republic of Armenia and the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic were dissolved in May 1918. In July 1920, the Bolsheviks occupied the region and on July 28, declared the Nikhchivanautonomous Soviet Socialist Republic with close ties to the Azerbaijan SSR, beginning seventy years of Soviet rule. The current leader of Nakhochivan is VasifTalibov, who has been in office since 1995, and is the leader of the autonomous republic since January 1990. The administrative capital city is Nakhhchivan, with an estimated population of more than 400,000. The first inhabitants of the region were probably the Bektashi people, who lived only in the dry woodlands of the north-east of the country.
