Michelle Phillips

Michelle Phillips is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and former model. She rose to fame as a vocalist in the musical quartet the Mamas and the Papas in the mid-1960s. She later established a successful career as an actress in film and television in the 1970s. Phillips was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in the crime biopic Dillinger. She is the last surviving original member of the M Mama and The Papas.

Phillips’ mother suffered heart problems stemming from a childhood bout with rheumatic fever, and died of a related brain hemorrhage when Phillips was five years old. Her father, wanting a change of scenery, relocated the family to Buffalo, New York, where they lived for nine months while he worked as a bartender. In June 1951, two days after Phillips’ seventh birthday, the family relocated to Mexico City, where her father had enrolled to study sociology on the GI Bill at Mexico City College. Throughout her childhood, Phillips’ primary language remained Spanish, though she later learned to write in English. She returned to the United States at the age of 13, where she lived with her father and sister in the Roma district of Cuauhtémoc, California.

Phillips recalled that hers and her sister’s experiences living in a different culture ‘helped get us over my mother’s death, and instead of grieving, we became very strong, independent, and free’ She has a daughter, singer Chynna Phillips, with her ex-husband, John Phillips, who she married in 1962. She released her only solo album, Victim of Romance, in 1977. She appeared in a number of films in the 1980s, first in the comedy The Man with Bogart’s Face and then in the television series Knots Landing. She continued to appear in independent films after the millennium, with supporting parts in Jane White is Sick and Twisted and Kids in America and recurring guest roles in the TV series That’s Life and 7th Heaven. Phillips’ paternal grandfather, Marcus Gilliam, was from Walla Walla, Washington and work as a miner and hotelier in Erie, Pennsylvania. Gilliam County, Oregon takes its name from her paternal ancestors. She has one older sister, Russell Ann. She had one older brother, RussellAnn, who was born in San Diego, California, and later moved to New York City to live with her mother. She also has a younger sister, who lives in Los Angeles. She had a daughter with her husband, singer John Phillips. She currently lives in Pasadena, California and works as a model in San Francisco and lives with her sister in New York. Her son, Chynn Phillips, is a singer-songwriter.
