Michael John Douglas, known professionally as Michael Keaton, is an American actor. He first rose to fame for his roles on the CBS sitcoms All’s Fair and The Mary Tyler Moore Hour. He decided to use a stage name to satisfy SAG rules, as there was already an actor and daytime host with the same or similar names. In 2014, Keaton garnered critical acclaim for his performance in the black comedy film Birdman, winning a Golden Globe Award.

He was raised in a Catholic family, and is of half Irish descent through his mother. He is the youngest of seven children, and his father worked as a civil engineer and surveyor. He lives in Pennsylvania with his wife, Diane Keaton and their three children. He also has a son, Michael John Douglas Jr., who was born on September 5, 1951, in Kennedy Township, Pennsylvania, and lives in Los Angeles, California.

He currently works as a visiting scholar at Carnegie Mellon University and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the American College of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (ACMA). He is married to actress and former Miss Pennsylvania, Susan Keaton. His children are Michael Douglas, Jr. and Michael Douglas III, who is also an actor and a director. His daughter, Michael Douglas IV, is a writer and director. He had a role in the hit film Mr. Mom, which was met with universal acclaim. His next big break was working alongside Jim Belushi in the short-lived comedy series Working Stiffs, which showcased his comedic talent and led to a co-starring role in Night Shift directed by Ron Howard. He then became a leading man in the landmark hit Mr. Mom. In 1984, he tried to transition to dramatic leads as a hockey player in The Dream Team, though early as early as 1984, the studio was still unsure of how to market the film at the time. This resulted in the film being shelved until 1986, when Woody Allen cast Keaton as the lead in The Purple Rose of Cairo. In the 1990s, he played the title character in Batman Returns.
