Matthew Robert Smith is an English actor. He is best known for his roles as the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor in the BBC series Doctor Who and Prince Philip in the Netflix series The Crown. In film, he starred in Womb and portrayed the physical embodiment of Skynet in Terminator Genisys.

Smith initially aspired to be a professional footballer, but spondylolysis forced him out of the sport. He studied drama and creative writing at the University of East Anglia, graduating in 2005. Smith’s first television role came in 2006 as Jim Taylor in BBC adaptations of Philip Pullman’s The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North. His first major role in television came as Danny in the 2007 BBC series Party Animals. He left the series at the end of the 2013 Christmas Day special, ‘The Time of theDoctor’. In film, he starred in Womb and portrayed the physical embodiment of Skynet in Terminator Genisys. He has a sister named Laura Jayne, who was one of the dancers featured in the well-known music video for Eric Prydz’s 2004 song ‘Call on Me’ Smith attended Northampton School for Boys and later Alton College. His grandfather had played football for Notts County and Smith had also planned to play football, having played for the youth teams of Northampton Town, Nottingham Forest, and Leicester City, becoming captain of the latter’s youth team. In 2009, Smith auditioned for the role of Will McKenzie in the comedy series The Birdbetweeners, with the part eventually being given to Simon Morris.

He also appeared in The History Boys and The Master and Margarita in the West End. In 2013, he appeared in the stage adaptation of Swimming with Sharks with Christian Slater. He appeared in a critically acclaimed performance as Henry in That Face in the London West End theatre company The National Youth Theatre. In 2015, he played the lead role in the film version of The Book of Henry, starring alongside Tom Hiddleston and Emma Watson, in which he was nominated for a BAFTA for best supporting actor. In 2016, he had a supporting role in The Crown, playing Prince Philip, the son of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II, in the first episode of which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for best lead actor. The Crown is currently on Netflix, with a second episode due out in September 2015. Smith is the youngest person to portray the character of The Doctor in Doctor Who, and the youngest to play the role in any British television series other than The X-Files. He was born in Northampton, England, on 28 October 1982, and grew up in Alton, near Northampton. In 2003, he became an actor in 2003, performing in plays including Murder in the Cathedral and On the Shore of the Wide World in London theatres. He joined the National Youth Theater in London.
