Helen Hunt is an American actress and filmmaker. She rose to fame portraying Jamie Buchman in the sitcom Mad About You. Hunt won the Academy Award for Best Actress for starring as Carol Connelly in the romantic comedy As Good as It Gets. Her other notable films include Twister, Cast Away, What Women Want, Pay It Forward, Bobby, Soul Surfer and The Miracle Season.

Hunt’s paternal grandmother was from a German-Jewish family, while Hunt’s other grandparents were of English descent, with a Methodist religious background. Her uncle, Peter H. Hunt, is also a director. Her mother, Jane Elizabeth, worked as a photographer, and her father, Gordon Hunt, was a film, voice and stage director and acting coach.
