Released on June 11, 1982, by Universal Pictures, it was an immediate blockbuster, surpassing Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time. It was re-released in 1985, and again in 2002, to celebrate its 20th anniversary, with altered shots and additional scenes. In 1994, the film was added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress, being designated as \”culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. E.T. was widely acclaimed by critics and is considered to be one of the greatest films ofAll time. The concept was based on an imaginary friend Spielberg created after his parents’ divorce. In 1980, Spielberg met Mathison and developed a new story from the failed project Night Skies. Filming took place from September to December 1981 on a budget of USD 10. 5 million. Unlike most films, this one was shot in rough chronological order, to facilitate convincing emotional performances from the young cast. The animatronics of E T. were designed by Carlo Rambaldi. The alien learns to speak English by repeating what Gertie says as she watches Sesame Street and, at Elliott’s urging, dubs himself ‘E.T.’ The alien reads a comic strip where Buck Rogers, stranded, calls for help by building a makeshift communication device and is inspired to try it himself.

When government agents appear on the scene, the aliens flee in their spaceship, but in their haste, one of them is left behind. The next day, Elliott wakes up in a successful call to the field, where they make a call to call home. Elliott and E. t. go to a hospital to treat the dying alien. While the scientists are treating Elliott, who is also dying, Mary becomes horrified when she discovers her son’s mental illness. Scientists invades the house, asking if they have met E T, and asks Elliott if they met the aliens. Michael takes E T home to a culvert and finds the next day he and Elliott have met the scientists, who are treating him for mental health problems. E.t. is found dead in the culvert, just as a group of government agents dressed in astronaut suits, led by a man in a space suit, invade the house and take him to the hospital. The scientists are led by the man in the space suit to treat Elliott, and Elliott to a mental hospital, where he is treated for mental and physical health issues. Elliott is also taken to a psychiatric ward to be treated for his mental illness, and the scientists set up a hospital at the house to treat him for physical and emotional problems.
