Dominik Hašek

Dominik Hašek is a Czech former ice hockey goaltender. He played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators in his 16-season NHL career. In 2002, he became the first European-trained starting goaltender to win the Stanley Cup. He led the Czech national ice hockey team to its first and only Olympic gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. He retired from the NHL in 2012, but returned to play for HC P Parubice in the 2013-14 KHL season. He died in a car accident in December 2013, aged 43. His daughter, Katerina, is a professional hockey player as well.

He played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators in his 16-season NHL career. He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, both with the Red Wings. In 2002, he became the first European-trained starting goaltender to win the Stanley Cup. At the time of his retirement, he was the oldest active goalie in the NHL at 43, and the second-oldest active player in the league after Red Wings teammate Chris Chelios, who was 46. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 17, 2014. His number was retired by the Sabres and HC Pardubice. He won six Vezina Trophies, the most under the award’s current system of voting for the best individual goalie. He holds the highest career save percentage of all time and the third-highest single-season save percentage. He led the Czech national ice hockey team to its first and only Olympic gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. He announced his retirement on October 9, 2012, and signed with Spartak Moscow of the KHL for the last season of his career. In April 2009, he announced a comeback to professional hockey and signed a contract with HC Parubice of the Czech Extraliga. He has been named the most valuable player in Extralga in 1987, 1989, 1990, and 1990.

He also won the Golden Hockey Stick in 1987 and 1989, and was awarded the Golden Stick in 1989 and 1990, as well as the Golden Glove in 1990 and 1990 for his play in the Czechoslovak Extraligas. In 2010, he won the most games played with HC Jihlava and was named the Most Valuable Player in the Extralliga. In 2011, he played in the World Cup of Hockey for the Czech Republic, where he helped his country win the gold medal for the first time in the history of the event.
