He won the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor in 2012 for portraying serial killer Fred West in Appropriate Adult. He played Jean Valjean in the 2018 BBC miniseries Les Misérables. In 2019, West will appear in Sky One’s Brassic, also in the recurring role of Chris Cox. West is the first cousin once removed of U.S. politician Thomas Eagleton. He also performed the opening track on Eminem’s 2009 album Relapse, as a doctor discharging Eminem from a rehab facility.

He has also appeared in the theatre, playing Edward in Simon Gray’s Life Is A Dream, and in Helen Edmundson’s Pedro Calderon de la Barca’s The Voysey in Life Is a Dream, which he took title of for the Royal National Theatre in June 2011. In 2012, West was offered the role. of Mance Rayder in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones, but turned it down due to the. amount of time he would have to spend away from his family. In 2018 it was reported that West was represented by Tavistock Wood Management. That year he appeared in Colette as the eponymous husband of Victor Hugo’s Victor Victor Hugo.
