It became the highest grossing Bollywood film of the year, and one of the most successful Indian films in history. It won 10 Filmfare Awards, the most for a single film at that time, and the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. It is the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema, and is still being shown at the Maratha Mandir theatre in Mumbai, 24 years after its first release. It was placed twelfth on the British Film Institute’s list of top Indian films of all time. It spawned many imitations of its story and style and homages to specific scenes, including the film’s soundtrack album, which was one of most popular of the 1990s. The soundtrack album became one of the most popular of the 90s, with the soundtrack album becoming one of the most popular of the 20th century, as well as the 30th anniversary and the 50th  anniversaries of the birth of the first president of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in 1998.

The movie is one of only three Hindi films in the reference book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, and was placed in the top 10 of the 1001 Movies you must see before you-die list in the British Film Institute’s list of top Indian films of all time, along with Raj and Kajol and Bhupinder Kaur’s “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” The film was shot in India, London, and Switzerland, from September 1994 to August 1995, and starred Shah Rukh Khan, Javed Siddiqui, Ravi Agrawal, Amitabh Bachchan, Vijay Prakash, Krishna Ragpal, Sally Kumar, Manoj Bajpayee and Ranveer Jhansi. It was released on 20 October 1995, the same year as “The Godfather” and “Jurassic Park”. The film was directed by Chopra and produced by his father Yash Chopra, and written by Javed Siddiqui with Aditya Chopra. The soundtrack album was also written by Shediqui and Babri Sudhir Jhawan.
