Parinda won two National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards, and was India’s official selection for the 1990 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but it was not nominated. In 2015, Chopra remade Parinda as a Hollywood film titled Broken Horses starring Vincent D’Onofrio, Anton Yelchin and Chris Marquette. The movie is considered to be one of the most influential films of the 1980s and 1990s in the Indian film industry. It was released in a single print at Mumbai’s Regal Cinema’s in 1985, but failed to find distributors and Chopra made the film a single release at Regal cinema’s Mumbai’s in 1986. The two brothers are caught on different sides of a gang war after Karan decides to avenge his friend’s death by Anna. Kishan works for Anna Seth, a gangster who owns an oil factory as a front for his illegal activities.
Unaware of his brother’s affiliation with a gang, Karan returns to Mumbai after completing his studies in the United States. Karan joins Anna’s gang to get close to the crime boss, and falls in love with Paro, the sister of his friend Prakash, who is killed by Anna’s henchman Abdul. The next day, Anna orders Karan to kill rival gangster Musa, while accompanied by his gunman Francis. Karan kills Francis and joins Musa instead. With Musa’s help Karan and Paro are married to Toldoldold Musa that he had been manipulating Karan, and kills him on their wedding night. Paro and Karan are then forced to leave the city and leave the wedding ceremony on the same day. In 1985, the film was made into a suspense thriller Khamosh, starring Naseeruddin Shah, Amol Palekar, Shabana Azmi and Amol Shabani. The sequel, Khamosh: The Second Half, was released the same year. It also starred Naseem Shah, Shahabuddin, Amol Palekar and Shabana Azmi, and Suresh Oberoi and Tom Alter play supporting characters. The third and final film in the series was Khamosh The Third and Fourth, which was released a year after Parinda. The fourth and final installment of the series, Parinda: The Fourth and Fifth, released in 1987, was directed by Vinod Chopra and starring Ravi Agrawal.
