Kher has appeared in over 500 films in several languages and many plays. He has held the post of chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the National School of Drama in India. He was appointed FTII chairman in October 2017 and he contributed many things there, however his appointment was cited as problematic due to his pro-BJP stance and prolonged absences. On 31 October 2018, he resigned as the chairman of FTII, citing his work commitments for the American TV show New Amsterdam. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2004 and thePadma Bhushan in 2016 for his contribution in the field of cinema and arts. He is known internationally for Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and The Mistress of Spices, Lust, Caution, Spehs, and ER-winning ER. In 2012, he co-starred in the Silver Linings Academy Award-winning Playbook. In 2011, he starred in the film Tere Sang Sang, directed by Malish Kaushik. He started a production company, Karol Bagh Productions, which studied together at NSD, NSD and NSD’s NSD College of Arts and Crafts.

His first role was playing a 65-year-old at the age of 29. He played the role of the Police Commissioner, Rathor, in the critically acclaimed film Wednesday. He ventured into directing with Om Jai Jagadish and has been a producer. He produced and starred in Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara. He received the Best Actor Award from the Karachi International Film Festival for hisperformance in Maine Gandhi. He received a BAFTA nomination for his supporting role in the British television sitcom The Boy With The Topknot. He has enjoyed accolades for acting in Hum Aapke Hai Kaun while having face paralysis. He starred alongside Shah Rukh Khan in many films such as Zamaana Deewana, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Chaahat, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mohabbatein, Veer-Zaara, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, and Happy New Year. He also starred in a play about his own life called Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai, which was directed by Feroz Abbas Khan Abbas. He said that he lost his hair at a young age, and thus, his first roles were in plays performed at the Himachal Pradesh University. He taught drama in Raj Bisaria’s Bharatendu Natya Akademi in Lucknow for a small part in his directorial debut movie Sheeshay ka Ghar.
