Anil Kapoor

Anil Kapoor was born into a Punjabi Hindu family on 24 December 1956 in Chembur, Mumbai, India. He made his Hindi films debut with Umesh Mehra’s Hamare Tumhare in a small role. He then starred as a lead actor in the 1980 Telugu film, Vamsa Vruksham directed by Bapu. He received his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Yash Chopra’s Mashaal. His first role in an international film was in Danny Boyle’s Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.

He made his Hindi films debut with Umesh Mehra’s Hamare Tumhare in a small role. He then starred as a lead actor in the 1980 Telugu film, Vamsa Vruksham directed by Bapu. He received his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Yash Chopra’s Mashaal. Kapoor’s first role in an international film was in Danny Boyle’s Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, for which he shared the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. In 1984, Kapoor married Sunita Bhavnani, a costume designer with whom he has two daughters and a son. His elder daughter Sonam Kapoor is an actress and their younger daughter Rhea Kapoor is a film producer and their son Harshvardhan Kapoor  is also an actor. He is referred to as ‘AK’ by his children. He gained recognition in Bollywood with Yash Naseer’s Wori Tapori as a Tapori, a stubble look that would become fashionable in India many years later. He has appeared in over a hundred Hindi-language films, as well as international films and television series.

His career has spanned 40 years as an actor, and as a producer since 2005. He has also won numerous awards in his career, including two National Film Awards and six Filmfare Awards in varied acting categories. The late actress Sridevi and the producer Mona Shourie Kapoor were his sisters-in-law, and Sandeep Marwah, founder of the Noida Film City and owner of Marwahs Studios, is his brother- in-law. The Kapoor family of Prithviraj Kapoor are also his relatives as Prith Viraj was his father’s cousin. He played his first leading role in his first Hindi film, Pallavi Anu Pallavi, directed by Mani Ratnam. In the same year, he also appeared in 2 more movies – Ekaho and Sahan Kaho. In 1981, he appeared in Mathyu’s Kaho and Hum Sahan Se Guzaraya. He won his first National Film Award for Best Actor for the film, Pukar. He also won his third Filmfare Best Supporting actor Award for No Entry and Dil Dhadakne Do. In 2002, he won his second Filmfare Critics Award for best supporting actor for the movie, Virasat. The film earned him a National Film award for best performance in a comedy or drama. In 2005, he was awarded a National Award for his work in the film Aap Ke Saath, which featured Padmini Padmini Kolhapure.
