The special was commissioned and sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company, and was written over a period of several weeks, and produced on a small budget in six months. The idea for the documentary was a success, and Mendelson proposed the special as a TV special in the fall of 1965.

It made its debut on CBS on December 9, 1965, and received high ratings and acclaim from critics. It was the first Peanuts TV special to have a laugh track, in addition to its tone, pacing, music, and animation, led both the producers and the network to predict the project would be a disaster, but it proved to be a success. The show has been shown on PBS and PBS stations in the UK, Australia, Canada, and Australia since the early 1990s, and on PBS in the U.S. since the mid-1990s.
