Squeeze (band)

Squeeze are an English rock band that came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the new wave period of the late 1970s. The group formed in Deptford, London, in 1974, and first broke up in 1982. They reformed in 1985, and disbanded again in 1999. In 2010, they issued Spot the Difference, an album of newly recorded versions of older material. The band’s first album of all-new material since 1998, Cradle to the Grave, was released in October 2015, followed by another album, The Knowledge, in October 2017.

The group formed in Deptford, London, in 1974, and first broke up in 1982. Squeeze then reformed in 1985, and disbanded again in 1999. In 2010, they issued Spot the Difference, an album of newly recorded versions of older material. The band’s first album of all-new material since 1998, Cradle to the Grave, was released in October 2015, followed by another album, The Knowledge, in October 2017. The vast majority of their material is composed of lyrics by Chris Difford and music by Glenn Tilbrook, who are guitarists and vocalists in the band. The duo were hailed as \”the heirs to Lennon and McCartney’s throne\” during the band’s initial popularity in the late 70s. In the UK, their singles \”Cool for Cats\”, \”Up the Junction\” and \”Labelled with Love\” were top-ten chart hits. Though not as commercially successful in the U.S., they had American hits with \”Tempted\”, \”Hourglass” and \”853-5937\”, and were considered a part of the Second British Invasion. In Australia, the band and album were dubbed UK Squeez owing to legal conflicts arising from a contemporary American band called \”Tight Squeezes\”. The name was dropped for all subsequent releases. The album East Side Story was produced by Elvis Costello and Roger Bechian, and featured the lead vocals of Paul Carrack, a former member of both British soul-pop band Ace and progressive rock band Roxy Music.

It was also a mild breakthrough in North America, as the single  Another Nail in My Heart was a No.56 hit in Canada. The former was frequently shown on independent US rock radio stations, and the former was often shown on video music shows in the US. In 1981, the group released the album Argybargy, which was a UK hit. The second single,  Pulling Mussels, received airplay on independent rock radio shows in US and Canada, and was also shown on the independent video music show  56 for the video for The Tempted. The third album, ArgyBargy, was also  a UK hit, as was the album’s third LP, The Stranger, which featured lead vocals from Don Snow. The fourth album, This Side Story, was produced  by Elvis Costellos and Roger bechian and featured lead singer Don Snow on the track “This Side Story” It was released in 1982 and featured a line-up featuring Don Snow, Don Snow and Don Snow’s former bandmate Paul Carracks. The last album, East Side Side Story, was released in 1983 and featured  the lead singer Paul Carrack on the song “The Stranger”, and featured lead vocals by Don Snow on the LP “This  Side Story”.
