The current name of the town is Williamsburg after the king of England’s son, William William III, who was born in 1643. The name was changed to Williamsburg to honor the King of England in 1694. The City is home to the University of William and Mary, the second oldest college in the U. S. and the first of nine colonial universities in the south. The University of Williams & Mary was founded by Reverend James Blair in 1683. The college is located on the same site as the original Middle Plantations. It opened its doors to students and faculty in 1690. The first classes were held in the College Building, a precursor to the Wren Building, which is now the main building of the College. It also houses a library, a chapel, a church, a magazine and a store for storage and a magazine.
