In an interview on the first season DVD, BradleyWhitford said that he was originally cast as Sam, even though Aaron Sorkson had created the Josh character specifically for him. Other actors were seriously considered for other roles, including Alan Alda and Sidney Poitier for the President, Judd Hirsch for Leo, Eugene Levy for Toby, and CCH Pounder for C. J. The first season saw the return of the pilot team along with the addition of Ron Osborn and Jeff Reno as producers and Rick Cleveland as a second co-producer with Robert W. Glasser as an associate producer. Julie Herlock joined the production team after only five episodes. John Spencer died of a heart attack on December 16, 2005, about a year after his character experienced a nearly fatal heart attacks on the show. The loss of Spencer’s character was addressed beginning with the episode \”Election Day\”, which aired on April 2, 2006. Rob Lowe left the series in the fourthSeason reportedly due to not getting a salary increase. John Wells and Kristin Harwellyn Wells were the pilot producers for the pilot episode alongside Thomas Schlamme and Llemems and Michael Hissrich. Paul Redford served as a story editor throughout the first nine episodes of the second season. Lawrence O’Donnell Jr. worked as a consulting story editor for the second half of the third season. Paul Osborn served as an Associate Producer for the first six episodes of season three.
