The Office was met with mixed reviews during its short first season, but the following seasons received significant acclaim from television critics. Later seasons were criticized for a decline in quality, with many seeing Carell’s departure in season seven as a contributing factor. The final season ended the series’ run with a generally positive response. It was viewed by an estimated 5. 69 million viewers, after an hour-long series retrospective. The pilot episode is a direct adaptation of an episode of the original British series, with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant writing the pilot and the third-season episode \”The Convict\”. The series also had several guest directors, including Lost co-creator J.J. Abrams, Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon, and filmmakers Jon Favis and Jason Reitman.

Episodes have been directed by several of the actors on the show including Harold Ramreau, Harold Ramitman, Jason Re itman, and Brian Baumgartner. The show was co-produced by Daniels’s Deedle-Dee Productions, and Reveille Productions, in association with Universal Television. The original executive producers were Daniels, Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, RickyGervais, andStephen Merchant, with numerous others being promoted in later seasons. Other executive producers include cast members B.j.Novak and MindyKaling, as well as Paul Lieberstein and Jennifer Celotta. Credited with twenty-four episodes, Kaling is the most prolific writer among the staff, with 15 credited episodes. He left the showrunner spot after the eighth season for the potential Dwight Schrute spin-off, The Farm, which was eventually passed on by NBC. He then left the position when he co-created the comedy series Parks and Recreation with fellow Office writer Michael Schur and divided his time between both series. He later returned to the showrunners position for the ninth and final season. He is credited as executive producer and wrote the pilot episode of The Office. He also served multiple roles on the series, as they played regular characters on the Show, aswell as wrote, directed, and produced episodes. The first episode of The Office was directed by Randall Einhorn, who also directed the episodes The Seminar and The Search Committee.
