The first film adapts only the first half of the book, and consequently does not convey the message of the title as it was portrayed in the novel. The second film was subsequently used as a rough basis for the second film, The NeverEnded Story II: The Next Chapter. The third film, Escape from Fantasia, has an original plot not based onThe book and is the first in a series of three films based on The Never ended Story films. It was released in the U.S. on November 14, 1984. It has since been released in Europe, Australia, Canada, and the UK on November 17, 1985.

The book describes a young boy named Atreyu who is tasked to find a cure for the Childlike Empress who rules Fantasia and stop the Nothing from devouring the world. The Nothing summons a vicious and highly intelligent wolf-like creature named Gmorks to kill him. Bastian Bux is a shy and outcast bibliophile who lives in the fictional city of De Forest, Washington. He secretly takes the book and hides in the school’s attic to read it. He eventually meets the Southern Oracle, who tells him the only way to save the Empress is tofind a human child to give her a new name.
