The movie received five nominations at the 55th Academy Awards; Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score, with Streep winning Best Actress.

It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Actor in a Leading Actress category, but lost to The Godfather, directed by Tom Hanks, for the role of Robert Redford. It had its premiere at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in L.A. on Wednesday, December 8; then opened in nine theatres in New York City; San Francisco; San Jose, California; and San Francisco, San Jose; San Diego; and then in London; the film had its final premiere on December 16, 1982 in London, the same day as the London premiere of The Lord of the Rings: Through the Looking-out, starring Liam Neeson and Kate Winslet, at the Critic’s Club.
