Rose McGowan

Rósa Arianna McGowan is an American actress and singer. She made her Hollywood debut in the 1996 film The Doom Generation. She had her breakthrough in the horror film Scream and headlined the films Going All the Way, Devil in the Flesh and Jawbreaker. McGowan became known to television audiences for her role as Paige Matthews in The WB supernatural drama series Charmed.

She starred in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s double-feature film Grindhouse and appeared in the action-thriller series Chosen. In 2018, McGowan released her debut studio album, Planet 9, followed by a repackage in 2020. She has released a memoir, Brave, and starred in the four-part documentary series Citizen Rose, both in 2018. In 2017, Time recognized McGowan as one of the Silence Breakers, the magazine’s Person of the Year, for speaking out about sexual assault and harassment, specifically in regards to the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse cases and the Me Too movement. She was born in Florence, Italy, to American couple Daniel McGowan, an artist, and Terri, a writer. Her father ran an Italian chapter of the Children of God, which he and his wife were members of until 1978. She spent her early childhood at the group’s communes, often traveling through Europe with her parents. Her parents returned to the United States when she was 10 years old, and settled in Eugene, Oregon. She took ballet lessons until she was 13. At 15, she officially emancipated herself from her parents and moved to Los Angeles.

She lived with her father in Seattle, Washington, attended Roosevelt High School and Nova Alternative High School, and worked at McDonald’s. In 2001, she was cast for the role of Paige Matthews, a replacement for the lead actress Shannen Doherty, who had left the show. She gained much attention for the revealing fishnet outfit she wore to the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. In the dark comedy Jawbreaker, she portrayed Courtney Shayne, a popular yet male high school student who tries to cover up her involvement in a classmate’s murder. She based her performance on that of sociopathic character Gene Tierney in the film, Leave Her to Heaven. In 2011, she starred in a performance video for the song To accompany the release of the music video, Imperial Teen’s Yoo Hoo Hoo, which featured her as her band members with jawbreakers. She earned a nomination for Best Villain at the 1999 MTV Movie Awards for her performance in The Villain. She also appeared in a film adaptation of the Dean Koontz novel Phantoms, and was the face of American clothing company Bebe from 1998 to 1999. In 2012, she appeared in an episode of The Walking Dead, which was based on the novel The Walkingdead. She appeared in several other films, including Southie, Going All The Way, Lewis and Clark and George, and Devil In the Flesh. In 2013, she played the lead role in the movie Southie.
